6 Tips to Maintaining Self-Control Over the Holidays

If you're like me, you've spent too many post-holiday days trying to make up for the damage of overindulging in holiday snacks and foods. Holidays are filled with trigger foods and temptations that cause you to forget your health goals and eat too many unnecessary calories that will have you feeling defeated for days afterwards. So here are my favorite tips to maintaining self-control and stating on track over the holidays!

1. If you don't want to feel like a cow, don't graze like a cow
Often times there are a lot snack foods laying out for people to eat in between meals. However if you're like me, this temptation ruins my self-control over the holidays. I've mindlessly eaten these snacks and won't be hungry by the time the big meal rolls around.

So I came to this conclusion- if I don't want to feel like a cow, I don't need to graze all day like a cow. Cows spend their day walking around a field eating. That's not how I want to spend my holidays. For me, the mental and emotional effects of snacking all day for several days is worse than the weight gain. I would rather maintain self-control around snacks and eat nutrients during mealtime to feel confident and in control!

2. Drink water, not your calories
Not only will drinking water keep your cravings at bay, but reaching for water over alcoholic drinks will keep your calorie intake at bay too.

If you're like me, the sweeter the drink, the better. But the empty calories from mimosas with breakfast, margaritas at lunch and wine at dinner add up really quickly. In addition to that, consuming sugar makes you crave sugar. So you're more likely to eat yet more cookies, fudge, or pie.

If beer is more your style, I don't have to tell you how heavy you'll feel after the empty calories of a few brewskis. Beer + an endless supply of Christmas treats + a big family meal makes for one miserable feeling person.

Instead, stick to water through the day and have a drink or two with your meal.

3. Be intentional about your food choices
Before being tempted by food, decide your game plan and stick to it. If you eat nutrients first, you'll have less room for the unhealthy foods. You can also make a deal with yourself - skip the mashed potatoes at dinner and you can have a Christmas cookie. If you use a food journal or food tracking app, log your food ahead of time so you're less likely to overeat.

4. Make time to exercise
I must exercise during the holidays. It's my sanity and my "me" time. It's when I can take some time away from socializing and just relax. Even if I sneak away for only 10 minutes, i make exercise part of my daily routine.

Exercise not only gives you a break, but it gives you endorphins, you'll burn calories, and it gets you away from the tempting food staring you down all day.

5. Converse away from the kitchen
Because women work in the kitchen, the other women congregate to the kitchen to talk and catch up. Where is all the food? The kitchen. What do people do mindlessly? Eat. Put the two together and you can again easily eat your calories before sitting down to eat the meal you've helped prepare! So step out of the kitchen to catch up with family. Or...

6. Chew gum or {brush your teeth} to stop from snacking!
This is my favorite trick to keep from eating mindlessly. I hate to throw away a fresh piece of gum, and I don't want to ruin my freshly-brushed teeth by eating a brownie {or another sugary treat}. So keep an extra packet of gum in your pocket and keep your toothbrush handy!

Although keep in mind, life is about balance and celebration! You'll never get these days with your loved ones back, so cut yourself a little slack and enjoy a treat or two!

Finding time for nutrition as a teacher

Can I just say that I'm FREAKING OUT! We are 49 days away from the NYC Marathon

Marathon training has been an awesome experience, and I'm actually going to miss it when it's over. I'm in the peak of training, for sure. I've already run 20 miles twice, but I still have a 22-miler coming up before the end of the month, so that will be fun :)

I'm down to 9 toenails and on my second pair of shoes in this training cycle.

I also just started teaching high school video production and I LOVE it!
But teaching is tiring. Hydration and nutrition are a key to a healthy lifestyle, but especially during marathon training.

Knowing that my muscles need lots of nutrients I started drinking more protein shakes, only to find out that my protein contained gluten. Due to my MS I eat a gluten-free lifestyle, so my protein powder was actually counter-productive and was causing negative effects on my health. So hearing about my dilemma, the awesome people at Skoop sent me the best protein powder on the market!

I fell in love with Skoop and now have one of their plant-based protein shakes for breakfast every day! I've noticed that Skoop satisfies my hunger and cravings all day and it tastes delicious! (I really have noticed how I crave junk food on the days that I skip my Skoop shake!)

And as a teacher, it's easy to drink while I walk around the classroom and work with the students! I'm not tied down to a plate or bowl at my desk!

Skoop has three options of protein to fit your lifestyle: A-Game, B-Strong, and B-Lovely, all of which are plant-based, providing super nutrition in a bag (or packet, if you order individual packets).

The best part for me is that it provides 16 grams of protein and 50% of almost all vitamins you need each day, for only 160 calories!

I love Skoop so much that I just signed up to automatically receive a new bag of B-Strong every month! (This also keeps me from having to remember to reorder, on top of all the other things I have to remember for of my students!)

And for being one of my readers, you can enter my discount code for 10% off your order! So go to HealthySkoop.com and see which of their products work best for you! I have no doubt you'll love Skoop as much as I do!

On a Quest...

When I found out I got into the NYC Marathon I instantly began researching gluten free protein bars to ensure I was fueling {and refueling} without damaging my body with processed junk containing gluten.

It didn't take long before I found {and fell in love with} Quest Protein Bars!

Quest has a HUGE variety of delicious products!

Being a raspberry lover, I decided to dive right in to their White Chocolate Raspberry.

My goal was to only eat half of the bar, which is crazy because it was SO GOOD! So of course, I ate the whole thing.

It was incredibly flavorful and satisfying, and it didn't weigh me down during my workout! The best part is, they're so healthy that they won't ruin your workout, so you can eat them as dessert!

All Quest products are high in protein and fiber and low in sugar, which actually seems like a miracle considering how ridiculously good they are! Plus, as an added benefit, they're gluten free, so they don't damage your gut!

And if it couldn't get better, they offer a 100% money back guarantee! So try it and if you don't like it {which you will} you'll get your money back!

I also use them for traveling just in case I get hungry in the car!

Quest Protein Bars are definitely my official protein bars for my TCS NYC Marathon training! And actually, as I'm writing this, I have to go eat another one because they sound too good to resist!

Let's chat!

#HowINourish: 20 Days of Nourishment

My sweet friend Tiffany had a great idea and created 20 Days of Nourishment, a fun and personal challenge where you take note of how you're nourishing your mind, body and spirit. A lot of challenges focus on the body, or they focus on the mind, but I've never really seen a challenge where you focus on all three!

So today is day 1 of the #HowINourish challenge and it's already bringing out all the extra junk that's in my life. From food to the internet to music to my thoughts, there's  a lot of junk in my life.

In the challenge, you "write down what you fed your body, mind, and spirit today. Give each item or group of items a score on the Nourishment Scale. Add up your total score for the day and share it with #HowINourish." Here's the graph she created to log items:

What's different about this chart from others I've seen, other than the categories, is that when you record items (food, actions, etc.) you choose a nourishment number rather than recording calories, points or another number. This allows you to see how nourishing it is for you - not necessarily how healthy it is, but how beneficial it is. I love this because it corresponds with one of my favorite verses:

So this way of tracking items helps your realize where your effort is being spent (in your mind, body and spirit) and how beneficial it is to your life.

I love this because so many times I've counted calories or Weight Watchers points and only felt guilty or paranoid about needing to be better. I needed to eat less calories, I needed to eat less points, etc. This way of tracking helps me acknowledge what I'm doing, good and bad, and how beneficial it is.

I pray that keeping track of my body, mind and spirit's nourishment over the next 20 days helps me work on a few internal issues I've been dealing with lately. Hopefully my daily totals will continue to get higher each day as the challenge continues! I'm shooting for consistent 7s (representing the most nourishment) in all categories, although today I've already had a few 0s :)

I'll be blogging throughout the challenge to keep you updated on my progress and I'd love for you to join me!

Let's chat!
- What's your favorite way to nourish your mind, body and/or spirit?
- Do you track calories, points, food intake, etc.? Does it work for you?

Conquering the 21-Day Fix: Part 1

I was so excited when my friend Danielle asked me to participate in her 21-Day Fix! I'm always so focused with my running workouts that often times I neglect strength training and stretching! I watched this video and knew it was right down my alley, so I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to help Danielle!

When the 21-Day Fix came in the mail I couldn't wait to start reading up on the program! What could be better than someone telling you what to eat, how much to eat and exactly what exercises to do?! It makes true fitness and nutrition much easier. I'm 7 days into the challenge and I already love and feel the difference!

Here's my secrets so far:

1. Read ahead of time
It's important to know what you're getting yourself into so you can know how to best prepare. If you aren't fully informed on how (and why) the program works and how to make the most of it, then you'll quickly fall back into your old routines and habits and you won't get the most of a super easy program!

2. Meal prep
Preparing your meals for the week takes the most effort initially but is TOTALLY worth it when you've got healthy, delicious meals completely prepared when you're hungry. This is the time most people will go out to eat, will stop by a fast food restaurant or will eat junk food, but if you put invest a couple of hours ONE DAY and knock out all your meals for the entire week, you'll truly be on the road to a healthy lifestyle! Here are the keys to preparing your meals:
-Plan: this is super easy on the 21-Day Fix because Autumn (the creator of the challenge) gives a list of foods to choose from! Plus with websites like Pinterest, it's so easy to find clean-eating meals. On the 21-Day Fix, Autumn encourages participants to eat small every meals every 2-3 hours so keep that in mind when you're planning.

Here's an example of my meal planning the first day on the 21-Day Fix:

Lots of food, lots of meals, BUT I ate the same thing, or a simple variation of it, every other day for the first week. This make the meal prep so much easier! I've been meal planning for almost two months now and will NEVER go back!

Click here to see Danielle's blog post on how to meal prep.

3. Grocery Shop:
Now that you've planned what you're going to eat all week, it's the perfect time to go grocery shopping! You'll actually save money by meal planning before you grocery shop because you'll be buying food that you're actually planning on eating, rather than buying food that will spoil quickly because you chose to dine out for lunch and/or dinner rather than eating the healthy groceries you bought!

Here's my standard weekly shopping list. This includes everything on the meal plan above, and I make sure I buy enough for all of my meals for the entire week! Because I plan so well and make efficient meals (chicken and hamburger meat can be used for multiple meals, not one big entree) I actually can eat for an entire week on less than $60!

4. Cook:
Your meals are planned, your groceries are bought, now start cooking! Come up with the most efficient way to prepare your food and prepare all servings at once. For example, I eat two scrambled eggs each morning, so I'll count out how many days I'm preparing for and cook two eggs for each of those days at one time! To make this more time-efficient, I preheat my oven first so while I'm scrambling eggs I can have something baking in the oven at the same time!
I've gotten so comfortable with my food preparation that it only takes me a couple of hours to prepare EVERYTHING I'll eat the rest of the week. It's pretty incredible to think about all the time and money this actually saves me in effort and heartache to just knock it out at one time!

5. Package:
Now your food is cooked and ready to go, so now's the time to utilize those food storage containers and pack your food in proper serving sizes so you can just grab and go when it comes time to eat!

This is one of the reasons why I LOVE the 21-Day Fix! When you receive your package, you receive different colored containers based on what food you're eating. For example, when it comes to your vegetables, you measure your portions with the green container! A lot of people eat directly out of the colored containers each day. But I use the containers to measure out my portions then put the portions in a different storage containers during my food prep day. That way I'm not having to reuse (and rewash) the containers each day but I'm still eating proper portion sizes.

If you want more information about the Fix feel free to comment, email me, or reach out to Danielle here!

Up Next:
In my next post I'll continue my conquering tips by scheduling time for workouts, surviving through the workouts and monitoring your progress!

Let's talk it over!

For the second time ever! And I gave up.

For the second time ever!
For the second time ever, someone I didn't know (well, we work across the hall from each other, but I've only seen her a few times and don't even know her name) came up to me and told me I was skinny. I wanted to cry, hug them, and celebrate with a huge bowl of ice cream all at one time!

This is such an amazing feeling because I've always struggled with my weight. I've NEVER thought of myself as "skinny." Even when I was at my lowest weight, I thought, "I don't look as fat as I usually do." I wouldn't give myself the much-deserved credit and call myself "skinny."

Starting about 4th grade, I realized that I was chunkier than other kids my age. And I found out in a very painful way. I was in gymnastics and learning to do a flip-flop when two girls came up behind me and started talking to each other about how I'd never learn to do a flip-flop because I was too fat. My heart broke. I was so ashamed of myself and never went back to gymnastics, even though I loved it. Later that year in our PE class, our coach weighed everyone. One of the SAME girls from gymnastics was waiting in line behind me and when I stepped on the scale, she announced to the rest of my class, "OH MY GOSH! KRISTEN WEIGHS XXX( I can't remember what number was) POUNDS!" Again, I was devastated. To make it worse, when we were in high school, we were talking and joking one day and I asked if she remembered calling me fat and announcing my weight to everyone and her reply, as she was laughing, was "Yes! Well, you shouldn't have weighed so much!!" She pretty much opened the wound right back up.

Ever since those days in intermediate school, I've thought I was fat. I have countless stories, but now I have TWO stories of when people told me I was skinny. My heart is so happy! It encourages me to continue my progress of eating clean, running, and trying to better myself and my thinking.

I Gave Up
Now to switch gears, I tried celery for the first time. That's right. At 24 years and 11 months old, I tried celery for the first time. I was so excited about my prospective new favorite snack I even took a picture!

I put a light spread of peanut butter on each piece and jumped right in!

I should have known it was a bad omen when I couldn't get the celery out of my teeth after my first bite. I drudged through the first piece but  halfway through the second, I gave up. I scraped up the peanut butter and threw the celery away. There was no way I was going to waste precious peanut butter!

Eating celery is not for me. Maybe I'll like it when it's blended and covered in frozen strawberries when I make a shake, but it's not good in the solid form.

Do you like celery?
If so, how do you eat it?

“This is Why You’re Fat”

Finally someone told me the truth. Well, not really. But kinda. Jackie Warner (who is my new best friend, we’ve just never met, so she’s not yet aware that we’re besties) wrote the fantastic book, “This is Why You’re fat (And How to Get Thin Forever)” which has changed the way I look at food. I’m a few days into her fitness and nutrition plan and I feel like a changed woman.

The Recap:
She goes in-depth about balancing your body’s hormones by explaining what each hormone does and why it’s important to have more or less of it. Then she explains what foods help and hurt your hormones. For example, eating meat, fish, fruits and veggies help your hormones, while sugar tortures your body.

Although the most heartbreaking part of the book is when she said margaritas (among others) are “the worst of the worst drinks” because of the sugar. Yeah, I’m still crying over that one a little bit.

Her suggestion though: “eat like a cave woman.” Eat clean. Things that are natural help your body. Things that are processed, contain sodium, sugar and other “poisons” are a big reason why your hormones get out of whack, which can leave you feeling sleepy, sluggish, bloated, lazy, angry, sad, super-hyper and unable to focus, etc. in a jiffy.

So This is How It’s Effected Me:

In the few days I’ve followed her directions (aligned VERY clearly in the book) I’ve noticed I haven’t been on an emotional roller coaster. I haven’t been tired during the time of day I’m normally tired, I’m not overeating due to too long of a lag between meals, I’m not eating mindlessly (how could I? I took an hour and a half to prepare my meals for the week). I have a lot more self-control now, both in my emotions and in my cravings.

For example, The Hubs’ (aka my husband) birthday was this past weekend, so we still have lingering sweets around the house (peanut butter cookies, a sugar cookie cake, ice cream, etc.) and yesterday when I came home from work, I saw the items lying on the counter and thought they looked delicious (as I reminisced about delighting in them over the weekend), but didn’t think twice about turning them away. As a matter of fact, before I read the book I would have either:

A) Eaten them until they were gone so they didn’t stare at me any longer
B) Thrown them away, then regretted it, as I didn’t partake in step A
C) Started chewing gum like a mad woman trying to keep my jaw busy while reminding myself that I can’t ruin a perfectly good piece of gum, until the craving had passed

But last night was a feeling I hadn’t felt in a long time. The thought of, “yeah it looks good and sounds good, but I really don’t want to hurt the progress I’ve made so far.” Then I walked away and watched Real Housewives of Orange County like any respectable woman does.

I’ve always said that I never realize how good I feel until I eat or drink something unhealthy, and I feel bloated, lazy and gross. So this time around, I’m going to be more conscious about recognizing how good I feel when I eat clean, as opposed to not thinking of it until I eat something gross, then it’s too late.

I highly recommend the book, even if you aren't looking to lose weight. I think it's great to know how your body operates, so you can give it the proper fuel it needs!

Thanks Jackie! I'll be referring to this for many years to come!

Choosing to Eat Healthy: Tator Tots

I’m not like a lot of people who have always eaten healthy, and choose steamed veggies over fries. I’m actually the exact opposite. I love love LOVE sugar and fried foods, so when I go out to eat, or when I have a craving for something deliciously greasy, it’s hard for me to look past the side of French fries. Or in my case today, the tator tots as a snack.

On my way to sonic for my daily Diet Coke, I decided that their tator tots sounded soo delicious! I started looking through my book of Sonic coupons (I’m lame and I’m cheap. No shame.) to see if I had one for a free or discounted order of tots. Sadly, I did not. The pull of the tots kept drawing me in closer and closer, tempting me more and more.

Let me pause the story there.

When I came back from Disney World, I talked about how I gained 4 pounds in 4 days! I was so far out of my eating habits that I reverted back to my unhealthy, high school self, and unfortunately, could tell a difference on the scale. I did my “Disney Detox” the following week (I’m sure I’ll post more details on what that is at a later point), and got my weight down to what it was by Wednesday that week. I got super-fast results, that went away super fast.

The problem with my detox was that it was so extreme, that after I reached my goal, I slowly started slipping into my bad habits again. Snacking, eating portion sizes too big then going back for seconds, etc. The weight came back on really quickly and depressed me greatly!

I’ve talked about the emotional funk I’ve been in lately, and seeing the difference on the scale brought my funk back.

Well this week is no exception. After a fun weekend celebrating my friend’s birthday, which of course included going out to eat for lunch and dinner, plus two margaritas, and snacking while staying at my parents’ house, I was further in my bad, negative attitude than I have been in YEARS! I contemplated doing my detox again, but knowing how fast the weight came back on as soon as I stopped last time, I decided I needed to make a REAL change that lasted longer than 4 days!

I’m making a long story short. It wasn’t that easy by ANY means.

So let me resume my tale of the tator tots.

I tried to justify eating tots because I’m going to teach my fitness class tonight, then run afterwards. But I knew that I would regret eating the tots, especially considering I wasn’t even hungry, it just sounded good. Plus the fact that I’ve been hard on myself and my weight lately. So I decided to compromise with myself. I could have one of my favorite delicious, nutritious meals from Jason’s Deli, along with the strawberries (my absolute favorite fruit) in my refrigerator if I completed my workout AND skipped the tots.

So, that’s what I did. I’m getting to eat my favorite healthy meal with my favorite fruit, plus I get to work out.

I realize this isn’t a breakthrough for a lot of people, but seriously, I’ve really be struggling with my meal choices lately, so this is a huge first step, even though it’s just a little victory in the grand scheme of things.

I’m going to Washington, DC tomorrow and will stay there for a few days. So again, I’m worried about my food options. I’m a big believer in “enjoying the finer things in life” and “you only live once, might as well do it right!” or enjoying eating new things at different restaurants, etc. but I’m worried I’ll get carried away. I can’t afford to gain a pound a day like I did in Orlando! So hopefully this little victory sets me up for even more little victories throughout my trip. Hopefully I can update you on my blog throughout my trip, but if not, follow me on twitter @margrunner and follow my trip, my eating choices, and my ventures on there!

How do you talk yourself out of an unhealthy craving?
What is your favorite healthy meal?
How do you choose healthy meals when dining out at restaurants?

Warm in December...Perhaps the Saddest Post So Far

First of all, shout out to my readers to my latest international readers in Germany, France and Peru! Amazing! I love how awesome my readers are!

I just have to take a few minutes out of my day to talk about how STINKING hot it is in Dallas in DECEMBER!

As I walked out to my car to take my daily trip to Sonic, I noticed how beautiful and clear the sky was.

Then I remembered it was December. And I'm wearing sandals.

Here’s my daily happiness.

Shouldn’t someone tell Father Christmas, Mother Nature and Snow Miser to bring cold, wintery (my definition of happy) weather to Texas?

I don’t want to wear my sandals in December anymore! I need a really really good excuse to buy these!

By the way, my hips and abs are sore from my two-mile run yesterday! Hopefully my Michelin Man look will diminish soon. I hope to go to the gym again either tonight or tomorrow! But more on my short-term running goals later!

What’s weather like where you live?

What’s your favorite season?

Are you trying to find a reason to buy a super-cute pair of boots too? This one is (kind of) a joke.
