6 Tips to Maintaining Self-Control Over the Holidays

If you're like me, you've spent too many post-holiday days trying to make up for the damage of overindulging in holiday snacks and foods. Holidays are filled with trigger foods and temptations that cause you to forget your health goals and eat too many unnecessary calories that will have you feeling defeated for days afterwards. So here are my favorite tips to maintaining self-control and stating on track over the holidays!

1. If you don't want to feel like a cow, don't graze like a cow
Often times there are a lot snack foods laying out for people to eat in between meals. However if you're like me, this temptation ruins my self-control over the holidays. I've mindlessly eaten these snacks and won't be hungry by the time the big meal rolls around.

So I came to this conclusion- if I don't want to feel like a cow, I don't need to graze all day like a cow. Cows spend their day walking around a field eating. That's not how I want to spend my holidays. For me, the mental and emotional effects of snacking all day for several days is worse than the weight gain. I would rather maintain self-control around snacks and eat nutrients during mealtime to feel confident and in control!

2. Drink water, not your calories
Not only will drinking water keep your cravings at bay, but reaching for water over alcoholic drinks will keep your calorie intake at bay too.

If you're like me, the sweeter the drink, the better. But the empty calories from mimosas with breakfast, margaritas at lunch and wine at dinner add up really quickly. In addition to that, consuming sugar makes you crave sugar. So you're more likely to eat yet more cookies, fudge, or pie.

If beer is more your style, I don't have to tell you how heavy you'll feel after the empty calories of a few brewskis. Beer + an endless supply of Christmas treats + a big family meal makes for one miserable feeling person.

Instead, stick to water through the day and have a drink or two with your meal.

3. Be intentional about your food choices
Before being tempted by food, decide your game plan and stick to it. If you eat nutrients first, you'll have less room for the unhealthy foods. You can also make a deal with yourself - skip the mashed potatoes at dinner and you can have a Christmas cookie. If you use a food journal or food tracking app, log your food ahead of time so you're less likely to overeat.

4. Make time to exercise
I must exercise during the holidays. It's my sanity and my "me" time. It's when I can take some time away from socializing and just relax. Even if I sneak away for only 10 minutes, i make exercise part of my daily routine.

Exercise not only gives you a break, but it gives you endorphins, you'll burn calories, and it gets you away from the tempting food staring you down all day.

5. Converse away from the kitchen
Because women work in the kitchen, the other women congregate to the kitchen to talk and catch up. Where is all the food? The kitchen. What do people do mindlessly? Eat. Put the two together and you can again easily eat your calories before sitting down to eat the meal you've helped prepare! So step out of the kitchen to catch up with family. Or...

6. Chew gum or {brush your teeth} to stop from snacking!
This is my favorite trick to keep from eating mindlessly. I hate to throw away a fresh piece of gum, and I don't want to ruin my freshly-brushed teeth by eating a brownie {or another sugary treat}. So keep an extra packet of gum in your pocket and keep your toothbrush handy!

Although keep in mind, life is about balance and celebration! You'll never get these days with your loved ones back, so cut yourself a little slack and enjoy a treat or two!

Running in Mexico

Being a teacher has perks. It's called Spring Break (plus Christmas break, Thanksgiving break, and summer break).

This year for spring break the hubs and I decided to venture to Mexico! Neither of us had been there before and I couldn't turn down the chance of recalling my old high school Spanish knowledge (ahem, Spanish III award winner here. Not to brag.) and communicate with the locals!

The best way to see a new place is by walking, but I prefer to run. So the hubs and I had big plans of running around the resort area every (or almost every) day. Turns out our resort was built on the side of a mountain, complete with SUPER steep hills and
stairs upon
          stairs upon
                    stairs.

This was the amazing view from our room. But you can see how steep the hill was, and just imagine all the stairs it took to walk down to the buildings in front of us.

Like literally, day one I had to walk up the hills backwards because my legs were on fire.

We joked that the resort wasn't MDA compliant -- like ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant in the US. It was a reminder that we weren't in the States.

So seeing that my 11-miler run wasn't going to happen on stairs or hills that shot straight to Heaven, I reluctantly went into the gym to find a treadmill. The gym was inside a spa. That's right, a spa. A spa that was at least 80 degrees with no air circulation. (I found out that because of the hurricane that hit Cabo in September, a lot of businesses didn't have air conditioning.)

For some reason, running literally hadn't been so hard since I started running almost 5 years ago. But with a view like this, I wasn't trying to rush through my workout.

I struggled to run a .25 miles without stopping, but I pushed through and eventually ran .5 without stopping, then 1.0 without stopping.

Although the day I was the top calorie burner on that treadmill was a pretty sweet feeling :)

I loved Mexico, but I was ready to get back home to run back on the flatlands of Texas :)

Marathon #2!

I got HUGE news today!

I've been accepted to run in the Chicago Marathon for the National MS Society of Greater Illinois!

I also ran for the National MS Society when I ran the New York City Marathon, and it made the experience even more meaningful, knowing that I was running for those who can't.

So this year, I'm taking on Chicago!

Which makes me reminisce about my weekend in Chicago nearly two years ago. Let's recount what I can't wait to do again!

#3 Go sightseeing!

I hope to go to the Willis {aka Sears} Tower again!

#2 Go back to Wrigley Field.

Maybe we can tour it this time!

#1 The food. Ohmygosh yes.

I've been dreaming about Chicago pizza since I last ate it two years ago.

And since the New York City Marathon photographers royally screwed up and didn't capture me crossing the finish line of my first marathon, I'm being proactive to ensure I get a picture of me crossing the Chicago Marathon finish line:

Looks like I've got some muscle I need to go put on.

Super Bowl Fitness Challenge

The Super Bowl is like a national holiday in the US. A typical Super Bowl Sunday at our house looks like this: food, friends, more food, football, even more food and commercials.

But let's combat our food intake with a hardcore Super Bowl Fitness Challenge! We'll work on strength during the game and cardio during the commercial breaks!

Here's my video demonstrating the different moves, along with modifications for many of the exercises.

P.S. pay no attention to my lower back dropping during my pushups... it's a work in progress.

Remember, 80% of the battle is nutrition, 20% workouts. So don't overindulge on the chips, dip, wings, pizza, bacon wraps, etc. or else those burpees and high-knees will hurt even more!

The best breakfast place ever. period.

You know when it's a great vacation when you've lost track of time, so you look back at your pictures to help distinguish days but only find pictures of food and running a long the beach. And it would include naps but it's weird for someone to take pictures of you sleeping.

Monday we went to breakfast heaven. Not even kidding.

Amazing mimosas.

And even better food. My pancake flight is made up of cinnamon roll, sweet potato and blueberry danish pancakes. All gluten-free, all the best thing I've ever eaten (with or without gluten).

After nap time, we walked to the beach to watch the sun set.

Isn't this a super cool picture?

I love him.

You'll be happy to know that we found a fantastic Mexican food restaurant with great margaritas and salsa. Crisis averted. Plus they had delicious queso and a mariachi band playing Christmas songs at each table. Very festive!

We needed to run off some of the deliciousness we consumed the day before, so we went for another quick run along the beach.

Followed by an intense game of tennis.

Normally I would insert a breakfast or lunch picture now, but because we ate so much the day before, we weren't hungry until late in the afternoon. So we watched the sun set from the pool.

Then we ate our meal of the day on a patio next to a fireplace.

I love San Diego.

I hope you're having a fantastic and restful Christmas Eve! We've got some super exciting plans for tonight, so stay tuned!

Starting Christmas Break with a Beach Run and a Boat

I love waking up on the West coast because of the 2-hour time difference from what I'm used to in Texas. So waking up at 8am with the sun already high and bright in the sky in California made for a perfect morning to run along the beach.

Running along the beach is now my new favorite running spot. It beats the treadmill for sure :) We dominated some killer hills to run 7 miles in almost 1:15, with plenty of stops along the way to to take pictures or to admire the scenery. It sure doesn't look like this in Texas.

We ate brunch at a cute, popular restaurant in Carlsbad where I tried kiwi for the first time. It was actually good!

Then walked along the beach. The hubs was the only one brave enough to touch the water. It was too cold for me.

Southern California may be close to Mexico, but they need to work on the quality of their margaritas and salsa.

We boarded on a yacht to look at a parade of lights on boats in San Diego Bay.

Dinner was delicious, with lots of gluten-free options! My heart can be stolen with a good spinach salad!

And the sunset was gorgeous!

The lights were so neat! The boats were decorated with Christmas lights in festive designs from Christmas trees to Rudolph pulling the boat. A definite must-do when in the area for Christmas!

I wonder how they get Christmas lights on these boats anyway...?
