6 Tips to Maintaining Self-Control Over the Holidays

If you're like me, you've spent too many post-holiday days trying to make up for the damage of overindulging in holiday snacks and foods. Holidays are filled with trigger foods and temptations that cause you to forget your health goals and eat too many unnecessary calories that will have you feeling defeated for days afterwards. So here are my favorite tips to maintaining self-control and stating on track over the holidays!

1. If you don't want to feel like a cow, don't graze like a cow
Often times there are a lot snack foods laying out for people to eat in between meals. However if you're like me, this temptation ruins my self-control over the holidays. I've mindlessly eaten these snacks and won't be hungry by the time the big meal rolls around.

So I came to this conclusion- if I don't want to feel like a cow, I don't need to graze all day like a cow. Cows spend their day walking around a field eating. That's not how I want to spend my holidays. For me, the mental and emotional effects of snacking all day for several days is worse than the weight gain. I would rather maintain self-control around snacks and eat nutrients during mealtime to feel confident and in control!

2. Drink water, not your calories
Not only will drinking water keep your cravings at bay, but reaching for water over alcoholic drinks will keep your calorie intake at bay too.

If you're like me, the sweeter the drink, the better. But the empty calories from mimosas with breakfast, margaritas at lunch and wine at dinner add up really quickly. In addition to that, consuming sugar makes you crave sugar. So you're more likely to eat yet more cookies, fudge, or pie.

If beer is more your style, I don't have to tell you how heavy you'll feel after the empty calories of a few brewskis. Beer + an endless supply of Christmas treats + a big family meal makes for one miserable feeling person.

Instead, stick to water through the day and have a drink or two with your meal.

3. Be intentional about your food choices
Before being tempted by food, decide your game plan and stick to it. If you eat nutrients first, you'll have less room for the unhealthy foods. You can also make a deal with yourself - skip the mashed potatoes at dinner and you can have a Christmas cookie. If you use a food journal or food tracking app, log your food ahead of time so you're less likely to overeat.

4. Make time to exercise
I must exercise during the holidays. It's my sanity and my "me" time. It's when I can take some time away from socializing and just relax. Even if I sneak away for only 10 minutes, i make exercise part of my daily routine.

Exercise not only gives you a break, but it gives you endorphins, you'll burn calories, and it gets you away from the tempting food staring you down all day.

5. Converse away from the kitchen
Because women work in the kitchen, the other women congregate to the kitchen to talk and catch up. Where is all the food? The kitchen. What do people do mindlessly? Eat. Put the two together and you can again easily eat your calories before sitting down to eat the meal you've helped prepare! So step out of the kitchen to catch up with family. Or...

6. Chew gum or {brush your teeth} to stop from snacking!
This is my favorite trick to keep from eating mindlessly. I hate to throw away a fresh piece of gum, and I don't want to ruin my freshly-brushed teeth by eating a brownie {or another sugary treat}. So keep an extra packet of gum in your pocket and keep your toothbrush handy!

Although keep in mind, life is about balance and celebration! You'll never get these days with your loved ones back, so cut yourself a little slack and enjoy a treat or two!

Benefits of Staying Active During Pregnancy

When you're pregnant it's tempting to give into {what seems like} never-ending fatigue, but this isn't the time to be selfish. This is the time to think about what's BEST for you and your baby. No one can grow a healthy baby but you. You should take that very seriously and do the best you can. Walk your way to a healthier pregnancy!

Growing a little one takes a lot of energy. And you know what's proven to give you energy?

No, not the bag of candy that sounds oh-so-good.

Exercise.

That's right. You have to expend energy to get energy. But that's not the only benefit of exercise. In fact, if you're already living a healthy lifestyle of eating a nutritionally balanced diet and staying active, you should continue doing just that. Don't stop! There are so many benefits to an active pregnancy rather than laying on the couch.

As a runner, it was important to stay active throughout my pregnancy. An active pregnancy has benefits for mom and baby. I especially wanted to continue running. But even on the days where running was a little difficult or I was injured {yes, I bounced back from a running injury DURING my pregnancy!} I still continued to walk!

I ran the Oklahoma City Half Marathon at 16 weeks pregnant

So even if your body isn't in running shape during pregnancy, walking brings the same benefits.

Benefits for Mom:
  • Less weight gain
  • Decreased Discomfort
  • Mood stability {hellooooo endorphins!}
  • Lower risk of gestational diabetes {also dangerous for baby}
  • Lower risk of gestational hypertension {also dangerous for baby}

Benefits for Baby:
  • Decreased fat mass
  • Improved stress tolerance
  • Advanced neurobehavioral maturation
  • Teaching your baby to be healthy from the start

Being pregnant isn't an excuse to lay around and eat pizza and chips for 9 months. It's actually the opposite. It's the best time to live a healthy and active lifestyle. There's so much you can't control in your pregnancy and baby's development, but you CAN control how active you are. So do what's best for you and baby and get ACTIVE!

OKC Half Marathon Recap with My New Running Buddy

I was so excited to run the Oklahoma City Memorial half marathon with my new little running buddy!

One of my favorite things about races is the energy at the race expo! My parents and the hubs came with me to pick up my race packet and participant shirt.

The expo was a little disappointing. It wasn't very well organized. But perhaps most frustrating was that no one could tell me about the elevation of the course. I searched on the official race site, on their Facebook page, on Google, asked on their Facebook wall and tweeted to them and couldn't find any information on the elevation whatsoever. The pacer also wasn't very helpful either because he didn't really know an answer either. So I was completely unprepared for the course that lied ahead.

Nevertheless, I was stoked to run a race with my baby and that my family was able to come and support me!

Downtown OKC was beautiful!

We walked around for a while the night before the race to find a good place to carb load. But it was prom night so all of the Italian restaurants had at least a 2 hour wait (another reason why this race was a little frustrating).

On race morning I woke up at 4:15 to eat my first bagel and get ready for the race. The families and I walked to the starting area. We walked through the OKC Memorial which was so serene and beautiful!

After a quick trip to the port-a-potties and a 168 second pause to remember those that were lost in the OKC bombing, I lined up in my corral!

The race started exactly at 6:30! My favorite part of the race was the tradition of local firefighters walking the course.

My legs felt heavy about a mile into the race, right in time for the first major hill of the course. Cut to 8 miles later {and several thoughts of "I'm never running a half marathon again" and "Why do I think running is fun?!}, I had already walked a few times because my body felt so lousy. I just never felt in rhythm. There were a few times where I felt like I couldn't get enough oxygen and got lightheaded {which scared me considering I'm providing oxygen for my new running buddy!}, so I swallowed my pride and walked for a few seconds as needed.

I was so relieved to see my family around mile 9!

I was so tempted to ask someone to either finish running with me or to walk with me the rest of the way, but I decided to tough it out and finish on my own, continuing to walk as needed.

I thought I was delusional when I finally saw the finish line! I was hoping it was my finish line {as if there would be another finish line in the area??? I told you I was delusional}. I decided to go for it was hard as I could and finish strong.

I'm thankful that I did because I broke my PR by a few seconds! I'm not sure how I did it considering it was a tough race + walking, but I did it!

My takeaways from this race:
 - 6:30 is a really early starting time
 - an elevation chart would be really helpful
 - eating dinner at 9:00pm and waking up at 4:30am isn't the best idea
 - running a half marathon while pregnant is much harder than running without a kid in your abdomen
 - walking during a race is OKAY! It doesn't make you any less of a runner!
 - no matter how many times you swear you'll never run a race again, you'll be looking for another race within a week

Overall I'm really thankful for this race because the weather was perfect {and in Oklahoma, there's only about 5 days of perfect weather a year} and it provided a nice weekend getaway with my family filled with lots of laughs and good conversations.

While I did struggle during this race, I'm sad this will probably be my only half marathon {at least officially} during this pregnancy. I might be crazy, but I'm still looking for a fun and entertaining race that I can do before I get too big!

Warrior Wednesday: Beth @ Miles and Trials

I'm so excited to kick off my recurring series where I tell the stories of the most amazing warriors! These ladies {hopefully some men's stories will be added to the collection soon!} have battled through tough situations and have either overcome, or are overcoming tough situations.

Today I'm truly honored for you to meet my friend Beth who has Multiple Sclerosis {we met in an online support group for athletes with MS} but is overcoming by staying active with marathons and even an Ironman Triathlon!

-------------------------
I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in March of 2012. Looking back now, I realize that I started feeling symptoms in May of the previous year. I had recently started running after a few months off due to injury. After some long runs, I would experience a tingling sensation throughout my lower legs. I described it as feeling like something was tickling my legs from the inside and just figured it was my muscles firing away from the exertion of the run.

Fast forward to fall of 2011, I had been doing Bikram hot yoga for a while and loved the sweaty-ness of the classes and how drained, but great I would feel afterward. Out of the blue one day in class I went into a certain pose that is done every class with my head tucked down and my back hunched over (sounds like a lovely move, doesn't it?) and had a shooting pain go from my right rib cage down to my foot. It felt like an electrical shock. I stood up out of the pose and was fine, so I just thought I had tweaked something, no big deal. A few days later I had forgotten about this incident and went back to class. Back in the same pose and again, I had this electrical shock feeling down my body. Strange, I thought, but as soon as I would come out of the pose it would go away. This went on for the next month of going to classes, but since nothing ever bothered other than in this and one other pose, I simply ignored it.

A week before Thanksgiving I began to feel some strange tingling and slight numbness in my toes. It slowly but gradually kept moving up my legs. I was training for an upcoming race and reluctantly took a few days off from running. That didn't help, so, of course, I started running again. The pain did not get worse when I ran, so I figured why not?

A trip to the ER and then a neurologist and I was told to go start getting MRIs and head down the path of tests. At the time I was reluctant to do so because we did not have great insurance and I knew it was going to cost many thousands of dollars and I felt like I would be poked and prodded and still not have an answer. So I tried to move on and forget all about it. I even ran the Phoenix Rock n Roll Marathon in January of that year. I thought eventually these weird sensations would go away and I'd just chalk it up to some unexplained thing. Well, that worked for a short period of time, but the tingling sensations remained.

In February 2012 I got very sick and was eventually told I had pneumonia. The tingling was still around, (along with a new electric shock when I would bend my neck downward), and something inside of me said it's time to try to figure this out. Finally this "thing" had my attention. 3 MRIs, various neurological exams, blood work, and a spinal tap later (yes the spinal tap is really as awful as everyone says it is, I would never wish the horrific headaches on anyone) and I received the MS diagnosis.

Being a runner at the time, my first concern was if I was going to be able to continue running. I had only recently become a runner, running my first marathon at age 38 to cross it off my bucket list. The only problem was I fell in love with it and have since run 11 marathons total! Anyway, after being told I had MS, I began to search the internet for advice on if I would be able to keep running marathons. I found nothing. Trying not to get discouraged I spoke with my doctor and he said that his hope for MS patients was that they could continue to live as close to their previous lives as possible and if I wanted to run and listened to my body that he did not see a reason why I shouldn't continue to run. Halellujah!

Since my diagnosis 3 years ago I have run 7 more marathons, including 2 Boston Marathons, and completed my first Half Ironman and Ironman triathlons this past year.

I decided to start my blog, www.milesandtrials.com, to document my journey and reach out to others that may be going through similar trials in life, whether it be with MS or something else. I pray that God will use me for His purpose and glory because "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

Running in Mexico

Being a teacher has perks. It's called Spring Break (plus Christmas break, Thanksgiving break, and summer break).

This year for spring break the hubs and I decided to venture to Mexico! Neither of us had been there before and I couldn't turn down the chance of recalling my old high school Spanish knowledge (ahem, Spanish III award winner here. Not to brag.) and communicate with the locals!

The best way to see a new place is by walking, but I prefer to run. So the hubs and I had big plans of running around the resort area every (or almost every) day. Turns out our resort was built on the side of a mountain, complete with SUPER steep hills and
stairs upon
          stairs upon
                    stairs.

This was the amazing view from our room. But you can see how steep the hill was, and just imagine all the stairs it took to walk down to the buildings in front of us.

Like literally, day one I had to walk up the hills backwards because my legs were on fire.

We joked that the resort wasn't MDA compliant -- like ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant in the US. It was a reminder that we weren't in the States.

So seeing that my 11-miler run wasn't going to happen on stairs or hills that shot straight to Heaven, I reluctantly went into the gym to find a treadmill. The gym was inside a spa. That's right, a spa. A spa that was at least 80 degrees with no air circulation. (I found out that because of the hurricane that hit Cabo in September, a lot of businesses didn't have air conditioning.)

For some reason, running literally hadn't been so hard since I started running almost 5 years ago. But with a view like this, I wasn't trying to rush through my workout.

I struggled to run a .25 miles without stopping, but I pushed through and eventually ran .5 without stopping, then 1.0 without stopping.

Although the day I was the top calorie burner on that treadmill was a pretty sweet feeling :)

I loved Mexico, but I was ready to get back home to run back on the flatlands of Texas :)

Marathon #2!

I got HUGE news today!

I've been accepted to run in the Chicago Marathon for the National MS Society of Greater Illinois!

I also ran for the National MS Society when I ran the New York City Marathon, and it made the experience even more meaningful, knowing that I was running for those who can't.

So this year, I'm taking on Chicago!

Which makes me reminisce about my weekend in Chicago nearly two years ago. Let's recount what I can't wait to do again!

#3 Go sightseeing!

I hope to go to the Willis {aka Sears} Tower again!

#2 Go back to Wrigley Field.

Maybe we can tour it this time!

#1 The food. Ohmygosh yes.

I've been dreaming about Chicago pizza since I last ate it two years ago.

And since the New York City Marathon photographers royally screwed up and didn't capture me crossing the finish line of my first marathon, I'm being proactive to ensure I get a picture of me crossing the Chicago Marathon finish line:

Looks like I've got some muscle I need to go put on.

Super Bowl Fitness Challenge

The Super Bowl is like a national holiday in the US. A typical Super Bowl Sunday at our house looks like this: food, friends, more food, football, even more food and commercials.

But let's combat our food intake with a hardcore Super Bowl Fitness Challenge! We'll work on strength during the game and cardio during the commercial breaks!

Here's my video demonstrating the different moves, along with modifications for many of the exercises.

P.S. pay no attention to my lower back dropping during my pushups... it's a work in progress.

Remember, 80% of the battle is nutrition, 20% workouts. So don't overindulge on the chips, dip, wings, pizza, bacon wraps, etc. or else those burpees and high-knees will hurt even more!

My #GoalsToGlorify

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
I'm not much of a new years resolutioner, but I am VERY goal-oriented. Resolutions are quickly broken, but goals seem more like a promise to yourself. I believe goals are statements of faith that expand your character by challenging you in areas you want to improve. I thought for a few weeks on what my goals would be for the new year, and of course the typical
  1. I want to read my bible more often
  2. I want to lose weight
  3. I want to get healthier
all came to my mind. Those are great goals, but I wanted to dig deeper into my soul to find the areas that really need life-long improvement. I want 2015 to be dedicated to enjoying life like never before, growing closer to Christ, and dedicating my body to His plan for me.

Chelsy on instagram started a #GoalsToGlorify campaign, where we can think about goals that glorify God, so that we may grow mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically… not just physically, which is the foundation of many new years resolutions.

So I thought and prayed that the Lord would reveal to me the areas in which I need the most improvement, so here goes:

These three #GoalsToGlorify will challenge me all year, no doubt. But I'm so excited to see how much I'll grow because of the challenge! Writing them down makes them so real! It's scary and intimidating to set such high goals for myself, especially because I've fallen in these areas so many times before (and I have already slipped up this year). But I want to start focusing and making goals in areas other than fitness. I'm hopeful that the Lord will teach me great things in the upcoming year! I have many other goals that I hope to accomplish this year, but the above are the three are the ones that I want to wholly focus on. And if you're on instagram, it would be awesome to have you join the #GoalsToGlorify campaign!
