6 Tips to Maintaining Self-Control Over the Holidays

If you're like me, you've spent too many post-holiday days trying to make up for the damage of overindulging in holiday snacks and foods. Holidays are filled with trigger foods and temptations that cause you to forget your health goals and eat too many unnecessary calories that will have you feeling defeated for days afterwards. So here are my favorite tips to maintaining self-control and stating on track over the holidays!

1. If you don't want to feel like a cow, don't graze like a cow
Often times there are a lot snack foods laying out for people to eat in between meals. However if you're like me, this temptation ruins my self-control over the holidays. I've mindlessly eaten these snacks and won't be hungry by the time the big meal rolls around.

So I came to this conclusion- if I don't want to feel like a cow, I don't need to graze all day like a cow. Cows spend their day walking around a field eating. That's not how I want to spend my holidays. For me, the mental and emotional effects of snacking all day for several days is worse than the weight gain. I would rather maintain self-control around snacks and eat nutrients during mealtime to feel confident and in control!

2. Drink water, not your calories
Not only will drinking water keep your cravings at bay, but reaching for water over alcoholic drinks will keep your calorie intake at bay too.

If you're like me, the sweeter the drink, the better. But the empty calories from mimosas with breakfast, margaritas at lunch and wine at dinner add up really quickly. In addition to that, consuming sugar makes you crave sugar. So you're more likely to eat yet more cookies, fudge, or pie.

If beer is more your style, I don't have to tell you how heavy you'll feel after the empty calories of a few brewskis. Beer + an endless supply of Christmas treats + a big family meal makes for one miserable feeling person.

Instead, stick to water through the day and have a drink or two with your meal.

3. Be intentional about your food choices
Before being tempted by food, decide your game plan and stick to it. If you eat nutrients first, you'll have less room for the unhealthy foods. You can also make a deal with yourself - skip the mashed potatoes at dinner and you can have a Christmas cookie. If you use a food journal or food tracking app, log your food ahead of time so you're less likely to overeat.

4. Make time to exercise
I must exercise during the holidays. It's my sanity and my "me" time. It's when I can take some time away from socializing and just relax. Even if I sneak away for only 10 minutes, i make exercise part of my daily routine.

Exercise not only gives you a break, but it gives you endorphins, you'll burn calories, and it gets you away from the tempting food staring you down all day.

5. Converse away from the kitchen
Because women work in the kitchen, the other women congregate to the kitchen to talk and catch up. Where is all the food? The kitchen. What do people do mindlessly? Eat. Put the two together and you can again easily eat your calories before sitting down to eat the meal you've helped prepare! So step out of the kitchen to catch up with family. Or...

6. Chew gum or {brush your teeth} to stop from snacking!
This is my favorite trick to keep from eating mindlessly. I hate to throw away a fresh piece of gum, and I don't want to ruin my freshly-brushed teeth by eating a brownie {or another sugary treat}. So keep an extra packet of gum in your pocket and keep your toothbrush handy!

Although keep in mind, life is about balance and celebration! You'll never get these days with your loved ones back, so cut yourself a little slack and enjoy a treat or two!

Things I love #2

I just celebrated a belated Christmas with my family and got seriously awesome stuff!

1. Conair Curl Secret
Let me introduce you to my new best friend. It was at the top of my Christmas wish-list this year, so I'm so glad my mom bought it for me! I'm so hair impaired that it's sad. But luckily this thing is so easy to use and gives beautiful, natural curls!

2. My She Took a Breath and Let it Go journal
Also one of my Christmas gifts, which was designed by one of my mom's friends. It allows you to record your days, your prayers, praises, peaks valleys, etc. It's super adorable! See her other designs here.

3. My "See Countless Blessings" journal
Also along the lines of journaling (and before I received the above gift), I bought a lovely journal to write down my daily "what makes me happy" points, as part of my #GoalsToGlorify. I couldn't have picked out a more fitting cover if I would have created it myself.

Yes, my Christmas tree is still up, and no, it's not coming down anytime soon!

4. My news Mizuno Wave Rider 18s
Although I was really sad to retire my NYCM running shoes, these new babies made up for it pretty quickly. I only look longingly at my NYCM shoes approximately 3 times a week now, so that's an improvement. I love the wide toe box, the color, and whatever they do to the sole of the shoe to feel comfortable support. I'm not even going to act like I know the science that goes behind all that.

5. Annie's SnickerDoodle Cinnamon Sugar Cookies
One day I was craving a sugary snack (against my #GoalsToGlorify, I know) but didn't want candy. I stumbled into the gluten-free section of Walmart and chose what turned out to be one of the best snacks in my life. It's so good even the hubs was eating them by his own choice! Annie's is doing something right with that stuff.

By the way, nothing in this post is sponsored, I just seriously love this stuff! All opinions are honest and are my own. My #GoalsToGlorify

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
I'm not much of a new years resolutioner, but I am VERY goal-oriented. Resolutions are quickly broken, but goals seem more like a promise to yourself. I believe goals are statements of faith that expand your character by challenging you in areas you want to improve. I thought for a few weeks on what my goals would be for the new year, and of course the typical
  1. I want to read my bible more often
  2. I want to lose weight
  3. I want to get healthier
all came to my mind. Those are great goals, but I wanted to dig deeper into my soul to find the areas that really need life-long improvement. I want 2015 to be dedicated to enjoying life like never before, growing closer to Christ, and dedicating my body to His plan for me.

Chelsy on instagram started a #GoalsToGlorify campaign, where we can think about goals that glorify God, so that we may grow mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically… not just physically, which is the foundation of many new years resolutions.

So I thought and prayed that the Lord would reveal to me the areas in which I need the most improvement, so here goes:

These three #GoalsToGlorify will challenge me all year, no doubt. But I'm so excited to see how much I'll grow because of the challenge! Writing them down makes them so real! It's scary and intimidating to set such high goals for myself, especially because I've fallen in these areas so many times before (and I have already slipped up this year). But I want to start focusing and making goals in areas other than fitness. I'm hopeful that the Lord will teach me great things in the upcoming year! I have many other goals that I hope to accomplish this year, but the above are the three are the ones that I want to wholly focus on. And if you're on instagram, it would be awesome to have you join the #GoalsToGlorify campaign!
